During the COVID-19 pandemic, as screens became the primary window to the world, Eva Kamau saw a worrying shift in children’s behavior—longer screen times, irritability, and frequent sibling conflicts. As a mother, she observed these changes in her own children decided to take action.

From Crisis to Opportunity
In response to the challenges children faced during the lockdown, Eva founded Sports View Skaters with a mission to reduce isolation, screen time, and promote physical activity for better mental health. What started as a small initiative grew into a thriving talent academy. Thanks to support from WIDU, the academy expanded rapidly. The grant helped purchase custom-branded skating costumes, facilitated participation in a national tournament in Mombasa, and allowed for the acquisition of bikes for team training and rentals. The addition of a chess program further enriched the academy’s offerings, blending both physical and cognitive development.

A Holistic Approach to Child Development
Today, Sports View Skaters offers a range of activities including skating, bicycle riding lessons, chess coaching, and parent-inclusive programs. The academy’s approach is unique in that it caters to various interests and encourages children to explore different activities. This holistic model not only fosters physical health but also nurtures important life skills. The introduction of chess allows children to develop cognitive skills, while skating and biking help keep them active. Eva’s commitment to well-rounded development continues to drive the academy’s success.

Expanding Community Engagement
As the academy grew, Eva expanded her vision to include parents in the activities. The creation of a parent bike riding team has strengthened community bonds, allowing families to engage together in healthy activities. This intergenerational approach helps foster deeper connections between children and their parents, encouraging a family-oriented environment within the academy. The inclusive programs have had a positive impact, creating lasting relationships and a sense of shared purpose.
