In Hawassa, Bright Start Childcare, founded by Enkunesh Azanaw, is expanding childcare services while empowering women and supporting families. With help from the WIDU Local Call funding program, the daycare center has grown, providing a safe environment for children and job opportunities for women.
Addressing a Growing Need for Childcare
Childcare is a new concept in Ethiopia, but it addresses a crucial need as more women enter the workforce. Bright Start is the first licensed daycare in Hawassa, setting a new standard for early childhood care. The WIDU grant enabled Bright Start to purchase essential childcare items, improving service quality and creating a safer learning environment.

Economic Growth Through Employment Opportunities
Bright Start’s expansion has created eight jobs, all for women. This supports WIDU’s mission to empower entrepreneurs to address community needs. The WIDU funding, along with Enkunesh’s private investment, has helped expand services.
Overcoming Obstacles and Looking Ahead
Enkunesh faced financial challenges, particularly with unexpected expenses, but the WIDU support helped her navigate them.
"WIDU’s grant helped us create more job opportunities
for women and care for 40 children.”
Bright Start aims to further expand to meet the growing demand for quality childcare and offer a play-based curriculum for child development.

A Lasting Impact on the Community
Bright Start has had a significant impact on the community, showcasing the importance of well-supported initiatives. With continued backing, Enkunesh’s vision for improving the lives of children and supporting working parents is on track to make a lasting difference in Hawassa.
